GSM Records releases single:  2020 Visions:  Gonna Beat the Virus in the 504

(Greg Speck Music BMI)

New Orleans, LA, (March 2, 2021)

As a resident of New Orleans, LA since 2010, Greg Speck (“Captain Squeeze”/ “Commodore Squeeze”/ “Squeeze”) has joined the musicians’ community as an accordion/keyboard member. After a lifetime career of producing fusion jazz with his bands SuperNOVA and nouveau zydeco records with Captain Squeeze and the Zydeco Moshers, he currently creates music and videos about life in New Orleans and beyond.

When asked to describe the origins of this spoken word single release, Speck said,  “ I was journaling daily since the pandemic began in March, 2020, to help decompress and document these unprecedented COVID-19 times.  I grew exhausted with the ritual and turned to poetry as an outlet. I was looking through a series of photos I had taken since Mardi Gras ended and generated an epic poem about New Orleans’ scenes I observed each month while riding my bicycle in the city. The images drove the language for 2020 Visions: Gonna Beat the Virus in the 504.  I shared the poem with several friends and they gave me constructive feedback that I really appreciated.  One suggested turning it into a musical piece.  I had no intension of doing that initially but after watching a Last Poets piece on YouTube, I felt compelled to experiment with a spoken word concept.”

Speck decided to develop a New Orleans second line vibe.  Stephen Randall, drummer for The Day Walkers and his own band, The Big Easy Playboys, recorded his performances for most of the song’s percussion tracks at his studio while Speck performed and recorded the rest at Stonewall Studio, in the Marigny, where it all was mixed.

In 2020, Speck released a music video for Stranger in a Stranger Land, a composition from his last 11 song CD titled Songs with Accordion, Bass and Percussion  (GSM Records)
